HSBC Digital Solutions (HDS), an integrated group of over 3,000 individuals across eight locations (principally London, Krakow, Pune and Hong Kong) with a mandate to challenge our ways of working, changing rapidly to using modern tools and practices. In order to move from being a traditional ‘waterfall’ organisation to instead embrace the cloud and adopt Agile and DevOps practices, we are seeking to infuse HDS with additional digital talent and this role is a crucial enabler to successful execution of our digital strategy.

We are looking for experienced engineering leaders to take a lead role in our journey. This position is to focus on owning design, development and operations for HSBC digital, specialising in messaging.

Our ideal candidate will be a technically proficient senior technical director with ambition, imagination and a passion for disruptive digital products, agile development teams, and DevOps culture

In joining an early stage tech business the candidate will be exposed to challenges that will enable them to grow and give them exposure to HSBC Digital solution board room strategy and key decision making within the business.

Key Accountabilities

Accountable for design, build and run phases of product development while retaining a close alignment and hands-on approach to all architecture, development and IT operational aspects

Overall leadership of technology design, execution, and operation for digital messaging owning the product delivery lifecycle from planning through development, implementation and operations.

Ensuring products are developed to schedule within quality standards and cost objectives meet market demands.

Define standards and drive quality in to all areas of development using quality standards and processes.

Involvement with the ongoing product strategy including current UX, DevOps and Cloud development trends

Industry events and networking, conferences and public speaking, any technical PR

Trusted advisor to the Product Owner supporting the use of technology to innovate in the product domain

Technology evangelist for the value of technology in driving the product agenda

Architectural thought leadership on the use and combination of technologies

Oversight of engineering activities and delivery scheduling

Product level accountability for service outcomes and service

The role will have no direct reports but will oversee a sizeable matrix team of technologists operating to design, execute and operate products from a technology perspective

Heads of Product Technology will have overall accountability for the Technology engagement into the cross-functional teams. This differs from the practice responsibility of the functional heads such as Heads of Engineering, Head of Service Management, and Head of Architecture, who are responsible for training and discipline within their respective areas

Heads of Product Technology will utilize cross functional technology skills and resources from the across Project Management, Architecture, Technical Product Managers, Engineers, Testers, and Service Support


About You

BS / MS in Computer Science or relevant work experience

Relevant commercial experience in moving from legacy environments to modern public cloud based environments and their associated technologies (for example, AWS, Google compute or Azure)

Extensive experience in designing and delivering high performance and reliable full-stack web solutions, ideally in an open source environment

Proven management experience of distributed engineering teams

Relevant commercial experience in messaging (including SMS, Email and push messaging)

Expert level experience in back-end or full stack development on various Java based technology stacks (ideally Spring) and public cloud (ideally AWS)

Ability to driver delivery and a proven track record of success in challenging environments

Ability to change the culture of a development team

Ability to think and act strategically and proactively

Track record of building, managing & mentoring a team of developers

Excellent communication and collaboration skills in fluent English
